Beximco Phrama joins Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA)

Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited (“Beximco Pharma” or the “Company”) has joined Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA) in Bangladesh, an innovative coalition to use mobile phones for delivering life-saving health information to expectant and new mothers in Bangladesh. The Company has signed an agreement with D.Net, a social enterprise and the Coalition Coordinator of the MAMA initiative, at a simple ceremony held at Beximco Pharma’s Corporate Office on July 19, 2011. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and Access to Information (A2I) Programme at Prime Minister's Office are official partners of the initiative.

MAMA is a global alliance under which an innovative health information service has been designed in Bangladesh utilizing mobile phones to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes. As part of the new United States Global Health Initiative, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has catalyzed the formation of a public-private coalition in Bangladesh to support the implementation of the service. This service is going to be available through all networks after completion of pilot. The global partners are the Johnson & Johnson, United Nations Foundation, mHealth Alliance and Baby Center.

Mr. Nazmul Hassan, MP, Managing Director of Beximco Pharma and Dr. Ananya Raihan, Executive Director of D.Net signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations.

On joining the initiative, Beximco Pharma’s Managing Director Nazmul Hassan said: “Beximco Pharma has always been committed to providing better solutions to treat diseases through its wide range of medicines at a much affordable price. While the company is aware of its social responsibilities and thus creating value through responsible business, the joining of MAMA initiative is yet another milestone in our comprehensive CSR initiatives to promote health and wellbeing among the under-privileged.” Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in certain areas towards achieving MDGs, particularly in reducing child mortality. Beximco Pharma’s participation is a good example of how public-private partnerships can contribute to achieving sustained improvements in health outcomes and eventually health goals of the country.

Under the leadership of the Government of Bangladesh, MAMA Bangladesh will deliver life-saving health messages to Bangladeshi women and their families. Mobile health messages are designed to quickly and easily disseminate information that will inform women of ways to care for themselves during pregnancy, dispel myths and misconceptions, highlight warning signs, connect women with local health services, reinforce breast feeding practices, explain the benefits of family planning, and make mothers of newborns aware of how best to care for their babies. Currently in its design/test phase, Mobiles for Health will build and scale a platform to provide audio and text health messages to pregnant women, mothers of newborns and family gatekeepers, which will be available through all telecom networks.
